Connection problems

This page contains troubleshooting advice on connecting to the Cardiff Met WiFi.

Top tip: remember to enter your Cardiff Met username followed by @cardiffmet.ac.uk when you log in.

Windows troubleshooting

  1. Are WiFi networks visible?

    There should be a WiFi icon displayed in the bottom right, click this to view available networks. If this is not displayed then your wireless card may be disabled.


  2. Is your password correct?

    Check by logging on to a CardiffMet PC on site. If offsite, try to access the student or staff portal.  If you cannot login, reset your password here or contact the helpdesk (Tel: 029 2041 7000).


  3. Is your Cardiff Met network account active?
    • Is your account locked?
      If you make 10 unsuccessful attempts to login, your account will be locked. Please contact the helpdesk (Tel: 029 2041 7000) to unlock.
    • Do you have a financial block?
      Your account can be disabled due to non payment of fees. Contact the iZone (Tel: 029 2041 5600) to resolve this issue.
    • Have you finished studying at Cardiff Met? / Have you finished working for Cardiff Met?
      Your account will expire when you leave Cardiff Met.

  4. Have you connected to Eduroam previously?

    You may have an existing connection to Eduroam that is using incorrect login details, e.g. an old password. In this case you will need to remove the existing connection to create a new connection:

    1. Click the WiFi icon next to the time.
    2. Select Network Settings.
    3. Manage WiFi Settings.
    4. Scroll down to Manage Known Networks. This will list all networks you have an existing connection with.
    5. Select eduroam and / or eduroam_setup / Setup_CardiffMet and click Forget.

  5. Restart device and try connecting again

    After completing the previous steps restart your device and try connecting again.


  6. If you are still unable to connect, bring your device to the Technology Support Desk

    These are found in the IT Suite within the Library at Llandaff and Cyncoed campuses.

Apple Mac troubleshooting

  1. Are WiFi networks visible?

    There should be a WiFi icon displayed in the menu bar at the top of your screen, click this to view available networks. If this is not displayed then your wireless card may be disabled.


  2. Is your password correct?

    Check by logging on to a Cardiff Met PC on site. If offsite, try to access the student or staff portal.  If you cannot login, reset your password here or contact the helpdesk (Tel: 029 2041 7000).


  3. Is your Cardiff Met network account active?
    • Is your account locked?
      If you make 10 unsuccessful attempts to login, your account will be locked. Please contact the helpdesk (Tel: 029 2041 7000) to unlock.
    • Do you have a financial block?
      Your account can be disabled due to non payment of fees. Contact the iZone (Tel: 029 2041 5600) to resolve this issue.
    • Have you finished studying at Cardiff Met? / Have you finished working for Cardiff Met?
      Your account will expire when you leave Cardiff Met.

  4. Have you connected to Eduroam previously?

    You may have an existing connection to Eduroam that is using incorrect login details, i.e an old password. In this case you will need to remove the existing connection to create a new connection:

    1. Click the WiFi icon next to the time at the top of your screen
    2. Select Open Network Preferences
    3. Click Advanced
    4. Select eduroam and / or eduroam_setup / Setup_CardiffMet
    5. Click the - (minus) to remove the network
    6. Click OK
    7. Close the Settings box and select Apply

    You may need to remove an existing Profile from your settings:

    1. Click the WiFi icon next to the time at the top of your screen
    2. Select Open Network Preferences
    3. Click Show All
    4. Select Profiles
    5. Select eduroam then click - (minus) to remove the profile
    6. Click Remove to confirm

  5. Restart device and try connecting again

    After completing the previous steps restart your device and try connecting again.


  6. If you are still unable to connect, bring your device to the Technology Support Desk

    These are found in the IT Suite within the Library at Llandaff and Cyncoed campuses.

Apple iPad/iPhone troubleshooting

  1. Is your Wi-Fi switched on?

    Check within your phone settings to ensure Wi-Fi is turned on


  2. Is your password correct?

    Check by logging on to a Cardiff Met PC on site. If offsite, try to access the student or staff portal.  If you cannot login, reset your password here or contact the helpdesk (Tel: 02920417000).


  3. Is your Cardiff Met network account active?
    • Is your account locked?
      If you make 10 unsuccessful attempts to login, your account will be locked. Please contact the helpdesk (Tel: 02920417000) to unlock.
    • Do you have a financial block?
      Your account can be disabled due to non payment of fees. Contact the iZone (Tel: 02920415600) to resolve this issue.
    • Have you finished studying at Cardiff Met? / Have you finished working for Cardiff Met?
      Your account will expire when you leave CardiffMet.

  4. Have you connected to eduroam previously?

    You may have an existing connection to eduroam that is using incorrect login details, i.e an old password. In this case you will need to remove the existing connection to create a new connection:

    1. Enter your device Settings
    2. Select Wi-Fi
    3. Press eduroam and /or eduroam_setup / Setup_CardiffMet
    4. Press Forget this Network
    5. Confirm by pressing Forget

    If you cannot see an option to Forget this Network, you may need to remove an existing Profile from your settings:

    1. Enter your device Settings
    2. Select General
    3. Tap Profile
    4. Press eduroam and /or eduroam_setup / Setup_CardiffMet
    5. Tap Delete Profile
    6. Confirm by pressing Delete

  5. Restart device and try connecting again

    After completing the previous steps restart your device and try connecting again


  6. If you are still unable to connect, bring your device to the Technology Support Desk

    1. Go to Settings
    2. Select Wi-Fi
    3. Hold your finger on eduroam and / or eduroam_setup / Setup_CardiffMet for 3 seconds
    4. Select Forget

  5. Restart device and try connecting again

    After completing the previous steps restart your device and try connecting again.


  6. If you are still unable to connect, bring your device to the Technology Support Desk
