Library Terminology

An A-Z glossary of Library and Academic terminology

P

Literature or other information such as scientific studies that have been validated by members of an academic discipline other than the original author(s). Peer-reviewed books and journals can be trusted but you must think critically about what you read. When using journals in your work, it is vital these are peer-reviewed.

An academic publication collecting together a series of articles.

SEE ALSO: Journal

Using someone else’s work and taking credit for it in your academic work. If you read and use a book or journal, then you must give credit to the author(s) by acknowledging the work. This is known as Referencing. If you need help with Referencing, putting the words of others in your own words, or any other skill, then attend one of our Academic Practice Workshops.

If you require a particular resource for your studies or research that is not currently available, either through us or via an Interlibrary Loan, you can ask the library to purchase a copy using the Purchase Request form. A link to the form can be found at the top of the MetSearch homepage.
