EndNote

The EndNote Interface

Running along the top of the app’s screen is the File menu (File, Edit, References, Groups, etc.) which controls much of the functionality of EndNote. Pictured below is a full EndNote library with many references and groups, which will look different from a new, but blank, library. Essentially, there are three main parts to the EndNote interface.

From left to right:

  1. On the left, we have the Groups pane. This includes the All References line which you can think of like an in-box in an email application.
  2. In the middle, we have the All References pane. This includes your library’s references in no particular bibliographic style. The columns, such as Record Number, Author, Year, Title, and so forth, represent the basic elements needed to put together a reference. You will notice at the top of the middle section that there is a search box, which will become useful when you gather a large library.
  3. On the right, we have a Multi-function box which will only appear when you select a reference from the All References pane in the middle. The three functions of the box are Summary (previewing your reference in a selected bibliographic style), Edit (editing your reference’s data), and PDF (EndNote’s built-in PDF reader for reading PDFs if you have attached them to the references).

Adding References from MetSearch to EndNote

Into any browser, type: metsearch.cardiffmet.ac.uk. Search for anything you want.

  1. In the first record in the results screen, select the three dots ‘…’
  2. Select RIS ENDNOTE RIS (step 2). Select UTF-8 from the Encoding drop down box as per step 3 below. Finally, click DOWNLOAD (step 4).

  3. Sometimes EndNote launches automatically and imports the reference. If not, you need to Open the Prime_RIS_Export file from your downloads folder. Upon doing so, EndNote will open and your selected reference will be shown (not pictured).

Inserting your References into a Word Document

  1. After you have opened the Word app, click on the EndNote 21 tab to the right of the File Menu ribbon (step 1). The official name for the EndNote tab is Cite While You Write (CWYW) and is a small program added to Word called a plug-in. This plug-in will automatically be installed when you install EndNote 21 from AppsAnywhere.
  2. The Find & Insert My References box appears. In the Find search box type a memorable fact about your reference, like an author or date. Click Find and in the results select the reference you want to insert (step 3). The final step is click Insert.
  3. Both the in-text citation and the longer form of the reference will be inserted. It is possible to view these in any style by clicking on the Style drop down box (highlighted in yellow below). Practice inserting, removing (using Edit & Manage Citation(s) in the plug-in, not the delete key), and repeating this process until you are familiar with it.

Saving your EndNote Library File

  1. In the EndNote app, click on File in the File Menu and select Compress Library (.enlx). Click through any options, name your file and save it in a memorable location.
