This guide assumes that you have chosen EndNote as your preferred app for referencing. Please see our companion guide to Reference Management Software for a wider overview of the purpose of referencing apps and all competitor products. This guide is for those who have never used EndNote before and covers only the basics.
EndNote 21 is Cardiff Met’s recommended reference management software and the only premium software that we pay for on behalf of students and staff. EndNote 21 is the full and latest version and is installed on every computer on campus. It can capture, organise and annotate references, and use these in Word for your assignments in any bibliographic style. Cite Them Right is Cardiff Met’s official referencing style and this is built into EndNote.
Before you begin, it helps to learn the basics of how to reference academic works, and to develop good IT skills. Always learn EndNote without a pending deadline – it takes time, but your investment will pay off later by automating the writing of your bibliography, which some find tedious. Always be guided by your course leaders and teachers when it comes to referencing and related software. As a general rule, choosing to use referencing software or not is entirely your choice.
You can only install EndNote on personal devices. It is not possible to install software on student PCs on campus; EndNote is already installed there. Into any browser, type: appsanywhere.cardiffmet.ac.uk. Before beginning the install process, please ensure you have closed any Microsoft Office apps.
If you experience any difficulties with installing EndNote, please contact Cardiff Met’s IT Helpdesk which handles all installation matters.
