Experiential learning

Learning by doing

Kolb's famous theory explains the learning process as a cycle of phases that result from an individual's experience of something new or unexplained. It emphasises the role of real-world practical activities, active learner engagement and reflection as ways of fostering understanding and deeper, more meaningful learning.

Kolb's theory of experiential learning - a concise overview

Kolb's theory has been influential in the field of education and is used to design active, engaging learning experiences. Influenced by cognitivist and constructivist principles, it is a valuable tool for understanding how people learn and for designing effective learning environments and activities that facilitate the learning experience. Kolb's model breaks the learning process down in to four stages which make up a learning cycle.

Kolb's experiential learning cycle
  • Concrete experience: This is the first stage of the cycle, in which learners have a new experience. Concrete experience helps learners to connect with the material and to develop a personal understanding of it. This stage is often the most engaging for learners, as it allows them to have a direct experience with the material. Concrete experiences can be provided through a variety of activities, such as field trips, simulations, and role-playing.
  • Reflective observation: In this stage, learners reflect on the experience and think about what they learned from it. Reflective observation helps learners to think critically about the material and to make connections between their experiences and their existing knowledge. This stage is important for helping learners to make sense of their experiences. Reflective observation can be facilitated through activities such as journaling, discussion, and analysis.
  • Abstract conceptualization: This stage involves learners developing concepts and theories based on their observations. Abstract conceptualization helps learners to develop abstract concepts and theories that can be applied to new situations. His stage involves learners developing abstract concepts and theories based on their observations. Abstract conceptualization can be facilitated through activities such as reading, writing, and discussion.
  • Active experimentation: In this final stage, learners apply their new knowledge and skills in new situations. Active experimentation helps learners to apply their new knowledge and skills in real-world settings. This stage involves learners applying their new knowledge and skills in new situations. Active experimentation can be facilitated through activities such as projects, internships, and service learning.
  • Kolb's theory suggests that learners need to experience all four stages of the cycle in order to learn effectively. This is because each stage plays an important role in the learning process.
  • It is important to note that learners do not always progress through the experiential learning cycle in a linear fashion. They may move back and forth between the stages, or they may focus on one stage more than the others.
  • However, the four stages are all important for effective learning.
  • Kolb's model builds upon earlier ideas asserting the foundational role experience plays in human learning and has been influential in progressing learning design away from simple transmissive models (in which a teacher simply 'lectures at' students) towards learning activities which aim to facilitate individual insight as an aspect of the learner's learning experience
  • By designing learning activities that prompt, provoke and enable the intended new learning experience and the sense-making process that follows, experiential learning activities enhance the quality of understanding learners gain from experiencing and discovering the learning insight for themselves.
